Localized Contact Urticaria Caused by Lidocaine/Tetracaine Peel

Purpose

The purpose of the article is to report and discuss a case of an alergic reaction to 7% lidocaine, 7% tetracaine anesthetic cream. The reaction seen was an acute urticarial blistered reaction (severe hives).

Results

The study suggests that this acute onset adverse reaction is related to a hypersensitivity to one component of the anesthetics, propbably tetracaine. The study also cautions that the self-occluding nature of this particular topical anesthetic may a mask the reaction.
